Today is the feast day of St James, and the pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela in Spain were preparing to celebrate this feast.
As it happens, I know someone who has just finished walking 1600km to Santiago and she sent this photo of the crowd in front of the cathedral.
The people then heard the tragic news that a train derailed near Santiago, killing 77 people at the most recent count.
The public festivities were cancelled and the crowd above cleared the square in an hour and thoughts turned to the dead. May they rest in peace.
It's good to see some respect for the dead and bereaved and not a 'show must go on' attitude.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to lose a loved one, whatever the cause and at whatever age. Even more so than losing a loved one by natural causes, which at some stage is inevitable for everyone, I would say that in ascending order of tragedy, it is even sader to lose a loved one through an accident, by murder or by suicide. One always feels that people who die young or lose their lives in this way have not had the opportunity of reaching their God-given potential as a community or family member, because they have not reached the end of their natural life-cycle. Still, a long life doesn't guarantee that one will become the person that he/she was meant to be at all. Many people turn their own lives into a train wreck. Chris.
