It is probably something to do with that. I once visited a glasshouse here which grew strawberries. You could pay for a bucket and pick them yourself, so I assume they ripened on the ground, not after being frozen. Maybe colder weather slows the process and helps as well.
Woolies and Coles don't operate over there and so maybe they don't spend so much time in the freezer.
