All the people who welcome you and run the place seem to be volunteers. I split the journey over the Pyrenees by staying at a little refuge with an interesting group from all around the world.
The first day (yesterday) was sunny and warm, but it was quite a tough climb. Today there was a thick fog, but fortunately no wind. As soon as we crossed the border into Spain the sun came out. There was still some climbing today and it would be very tough to do St Jean Pied de Port to Roncevalles in one day.
Now I have to check out where to get dinner and go to the pilgrim's Mass at 8pm.
By the way, I was wrong in the last post. Doniban Galazi is the Basque name for St Jean Pied de Port. Don Iban means St John (meaning John the Baptist) Galazi is the name of the local district.
I'm stopping tomorrow at a small village somewhere, there might not be Internet access. The following day should be Pamplona (God willing) so I souls be able to post from there.
Location:Calle de Nuestra SeƱora de Roncesvalles,Roncesvalles,Spain
Finally on your way. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you again! How dare they make that dormitory up- to-date and comfortable!!!! I presume the walking stocks are proving invaluable -especially with the climbs involved. Glad you stopped that first night to break the journey into two parts. Seems the fim is correct in providing you with interesting travelling companions from all around the globe!! Did you continue on with some of them to Roncevalles? By the way - Happy Birthday for tomorrow (3rd Oct)! Until last year I bet you would never have dreamt that you'd be celebrating your bithday in Spain walking the Cimino!! Elaine
