Ponferrada

I am now in Ponferrada (despite what the GPS location says)
This is only 8km from Molinaseca, but we made a late start at 10am and the next albergue is at least 20km away. I did some shopping here and recharged my Vodafone SIM card.
There are also some interesting things to visit here, such as the medieval Templar castle above (though I think it has been extensively).
The next big town is Villafranca and then there are a couple of hills which I am told can be difficult, especially in rain.

  1. Hope it doesn't rain! Walking uphill is so much harder than walking on level ground.

Peter and I tackled the 7 bridges walk this morning. The weather was ideal (dry and 17-19 degrees). We managed 17km, which meant we went over all the bridges but didn't walk the 10km back to the start. Peter wasn't tired, in fact he kept running ahead, I think that after 4.5 hours of walking he'd just had enough! (John stayed home and watched TV).

  2. Dag Paul, heb je in het nieuwe pelgrims'hotel' geslapen ? Net naast een oude kapel met een late pelgrims'mis ? Het stappen lijkt goed te gaan !

  3. 27km would be a long way for me. I have been able to do about 20 comfortably, but after 30km I get sore feet and my knees start to hurt.
Sore legs and running out of wind are not really a problem, because you can always stop to catch your breath.
One lesson is that everyone has to walk at their own pace, which is sometimes hard for people in groups. A lot of people do this on their own and eventually find someone who walks at the same pace as themselves.
A good day for me is to leave around 8am and walk 10km or a bit more by 11am, then have break. Then walk another 5 and have lunch around 1.30pm. Then another 5km and think about finding an albergue at 3pm. That leaves time for a shower, wash some clothes and look for dinner.
If course this varies depending on how far apart the albergues are, and whether the walk is flat or hilly.

  4. Profi Paul, right timing, follow your own schedule but be part of the whole story. Met dank aan je lange effectieve wandelvoorbereiding in Sydney. Nog een beetje en het bord 100 km staat voor je neus. Dat had je natuurlijk verhoopt maar wordt ook echt. Stevig gestapt, straffe koffie. Bart
